My Journey: Successfully off Effexor – You Can Too

It took me a long time to gather the courage to write this article about my personal experience with Effexor, which you might also know as Venlafaxine. My personal story below explains how I came off of Effexor, handled the withdrawal symptoms, and how I am now free from this drug’s grasp.  If I help one person rid themselves of this burden, I will be happy.  This is my story.

March 11, 2017, was my 1st drug-free day off Effexor after 14 years having taken 112.5mg daily. It’s now June 12, 2017, and I haven’t looked back. A few times I’ve been tempted to go back; when things were emotionally tough; when the tears flowed and flowed. But then I found a toughness to pursue without it.

How did I do it? 14 years was a long time to be tethered to this mood altering prescription and I sure found out what a friend Effexor had become for me. It was like my “pep pill.” It gave me some type of “high”, a sense of fullness in my being; extra happiness and a sense that I was capable of a great many things. Effexor gave me confidence every day.

Coming off of it was a gradual process orchestrated by my Doctor. I cut back a small amount and stayed at that reduced dose for 3 weeks. I repeated this by cutting back another small amount and stayed at that lowered dose for another 3 weeks until, after about 14 weeks, I was down to 0 and off it completely.

How did I do it?

  1. I was very aware of my emotions and let myself “ride” with them – this means I did not try to stop them nor wallow in them, nor judge them. I just let myself have my feelings. If I was sad, I cried. I didn’t have to know the reason why I just let it be and let myself express how I felt until the feelings passed. Sometimes at work, this was challenging but I’d go in the bathroom or a private corridor and cry until the tears passed.
  2. I had good friends I could talk to on a regular basis, and I wrote in my journal.
  3. As soon as I started to notice feeling more “down” when my dose dropped, I began to take a St. Johns Wort supplement developed by Shaklee called Mood Lift along with another natural supplement called Stress Relief Complex also by Shaklee. Along with this I added in a vitamin B complex (2-4 daily) and magnesium (2-4 daily). I’ve listed the full supplement list below. The lower my Effexor dose became, the more of the Mood Lift, and Stress Relief Complex I took. Adding these gave me a feeling very similar to what I felt on Effexor.

I was, therefore able to let go of the Effexor and I hope it’s for good.

Why did I go off of the Effexor?

I was experiencing the following side effects, some of which were dangerous and very uncomfortable:

  1. High blood pressure
  2. Swallowing problems (dysphagia) and choking when eating
  3. Weight gain
  4. A feeling that my energy levels were unnatural for my body, providing me with “false energy” leading to burn out.

Did I experience any real lows coming off Effexor?

Yes I did. There were several ”crashes” – some sudden including unexpected crying jags and feeling very weepy for periods. Other times when I felt like I was stuck on a “down elevator” and things were crashing down. I didn’t know if I could make it and cope with reality but the supplements and riding through the feelings really helped me.
But after 3 months, I am glad to say that the crashes are way less frequent and basically gone.

Will I need to take the Mood Lift and Stress Relief for years?

No, I don’t think so. I have recently added the Mind Works to my daily routine and already I feel sharper in my brain and also that I don’t need as much of the Mood Lift or Stress Relief Complex daily when on the Mind Works.

Would I recommend this program to others?

Most definitely. It worked for me and continues to work. I know how hard it is for people to come off anti-depressants. I’m happy to talk with you about what I did in case it can also help you.
If you’d like a complete list of my program, please contact me directly <>. I plan to stay on the program for 6 months post withdrawal date of March 11. I will keep you posted.

The Health Stages of a Woman’s Life – Teenage Girls

Health for teenage girls:

For teens – time is of the essence – they are often rushed and have a heavy workload with school and “tight” schedules (in a hurry).  Teens are still growing and hormones are changing.  Teens may not understand or want to be bothered with the value of good nutrition.  They may be looking for the next “big supplement to hit the market” such as a new “Red Bull” type drink – full of caffeine and additives – to give them the energy to get through school, part-time jobs, and other stresses of teenage life.  But for teens, these types of supplements are not advised as they could do damage to the body.  Teens need supplements and natural foods which are both healthy and beneficial for their particular situation.

So what do teen girls need:

Teens have a higher protein requirement due to their natural growth process.
Protein is important as it provides the building blocks of the cells and builds cell strength; also warding off disease

If they work out – their protein need is even greater.

Teens can benefit from the Shaklee protein powders– to give them high quality, highly digestible proteins with quick absorption.  The added benefit is that these proteins can be prepared quickly into smoothies or taken with them in their backpacks or purses for a quick meal at school, at a friend’s house, or on a job.

They may also use the Meal Replacement bars, (also quite high in protein) in the same way.

Teens may be reluctant to eat a large variety of natural foods or vegetables.  For this reason, it is important that they take a good multivitamin which will allow the body’s many functions to run smoothly including muscle development. A perfect choice is the Shaklee Vita Lea with iron.

Other important supplements for PMS symptoms such as cramps,  and during menstruation are Omega 3’s and GLA (borage oil) – borage is known as the herb of gladness and gamma linolenic acid is a fatty acid which can help relieve PMS systems such as cramps, pain, and improve mood.  It is used to treat swelling in the body.

The GLA in the borage feeds women’s glands with the nutrients they need to go through the menstrual cycle every month.

Other good nutrients include magnesium, B vitamins (help combat stress), Vitamin C to increase use of the fatty acids. To avoid getting sick (and missing school) teens need to increase immunity and can use Nutriferon, Zinc and Vitamin C plus their multivitamin for this. it’s also Important that they reduce caffeine (this is very hard on the system and dangerous to the heart in large quantities). These supplements are recommended as an addition to a balanced diet of high-quality fruits, vegetables, grains and lean meats and fish.

Introducing Healthprint from Shaklee – Digital Health Assessment

Earlier this month Shaklee released a ground-breaking tool designed to provide near instant recommendations on clinically proven, dietary supplements that are educated and informed. These selections are based on a highly researched online questionnaire which incidentally, also weighs in your daily budget for supplements and vitamins.

Heard enough already? Go try it out here:

Watch this introductory video on the system

What is the Healthprint Assessment for?

The health assessment tool is designed to give you really informed information on the type of supplement that will be perfect for you based on the selections from the questionnaire. The questions asked aren’t the normal questions you might consider in a dietary assessment.

Also featured are budgetary concerns which takes into account a very affordable option for people wishing to utilize Shaklee’s decades of research and quality that they pour into their products. I thought this was particularly thoughtful as not all of us can afford the expensive regimens but want to experience the health benefits of Shaklee’s products.

Shaklee Healthprint Budget

One final feature is that you can run the assessment completely anonymously. It allows for guest use, although if you are a member you may be able to save your information and revisit the results at any time. It’s so new that we’re all learning the ins and outs and all the behind the scenes features.

If you’d like a hand with the evaluation tool and are uncomfortable with the questions, I would be happy to work with you on building a supplement plan for your specific needs and health goals.

Let’s chat about your health goals!

Shaklee Life Plan – A Morning of Healing Stories & Sharing

This event which took place on April 16 was touching in many ways.

We started with an informative video which introduced the new Shaklee President of North America, Heather Chastain and also featured Dr Daggy (chief scientist for Shaklee Life Plan), whom we all know and love.

Amey read from a speech of Jim Burke which gave her goosebumps;  it was about the profound simplicity of respecting nature and seeking a lifestyle which features the most natural diet possible while preserving the earth.  The speech also described how Dr Shaklee’s philosophy and products ensure exactly that – from 1960 until this day.

Also, there were two very moving testimonials.  One was by Marion Ellis, who has avoided hip surgery and has almost completely healed her hip with Shaklee nutrition, and other alternative methods.

Marion Ellis

And finally, a testimonial by Everett Hart who used Shaklee Vivix, Nutriferon and other products to completely cure his prostrate cancer, wow!

Everett Hart

Many newcomers were able to taste the Life Plan Shakes (yummy with frozen strawberries) and see the new Life Strips.  Plus, Sandi Rainer demonstrated the Shaklee Get Clean Line in special tribute to Earth Day.  Many left with Get Clean raffle prizes and are now cleaning without toxins !!

Planning a Healthy Home with Shaklee & All Seasons Health

Our informal presentations are really taking off! Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to come and sit in at any of our most recent events. As part of our mandate for presenting topics for community awareness, we had a super presentation by Marion Ellis on November 5.  Marion did a great deal of research about toxic substances found in common cleaning products that many of us can find right now under our kitchen sinks or amongst our cleaning supplies.

Not surprisingly, toxins found in our most common household cleaners can contribute to breathing problems including asthma, bronchitis, allergies, a host of skin problems and can even be cancer forming when used repeatedly.

We played a really interesting game during the presentation where we put all the toxic cleaning products into the landfill while estimating how long they would take to bio-degrade.

We saw samples of some laundry detergents such as Tide and Ivory Snow which were still clumped in a jar and hadn’t broken down after 10 years.  The Shaklee liquid laundry concentrate jar, however, was completely clear after 10 days!

If you haven’t switched to the Shaklee cleaners, now is a good time to change over.  These are very economical as they are concentrates.

1 bottle of Basic H for window cleaning sells for $11.05 which equals 3200 bottles of Windex at $4.99×3200 equals $15,968.00.

If you have any experience with Shaklee cleaning supplies, I’d love to hear from you in the comments. Or if you’d like to learn a little bit more, feel free to drop me a line.

Thank you for reading!

Healthy Kids Healthy Families. An Evening of Fun and Smoothies

Recently we’ve hosted some amazingly fun and informative events around Victoria and we have you to thank for helping them to become such wonderful evenings.

Our first event was held in September and it was such a huge success we decided to run another gathering in October.

The premise behind the events was to develop an informal gathering where we could all discuss healthy ways to help protect the family from the cold and flu season. A large part of this is ensuring the kids are getting the right healthy balance in their diet which can sometimes be a challenge as anyone with children can attest to.

To combat the ‘picky eater’ we opened up a Shaklee smoothie bar where anyone could build their own one-of-a-kind smoothie blend using various products and ingredients. This was a huge success and soon the kitchen was filled with smoothie dust and the sound of blenders.

As you can see from the images we’ve been having a lot of fun and learning some extremely valuable information from some very smart women. In that gallery we welcomed Sharon Nice, a successful Shaklee distributor and product expert. Visit her Facebook page here:

As well we learned a lot from Tracy Lowe who joined us on another night (also featured in the gallery above).

If you’ve missed out on our evenings and would like to keep in touch, please add your email address to the newsletter signup at the bottom of the website (all the way down on the left). Once you confirm your email address you won’t be left out in the dark when our next super fun event surfaces.

Our future events will tackle topics such as how to keep a clean, non-toxic home and learning about developing a home business and supplementing your income. Each event showcases an amazing presentation followed by a Q&A and of course, draw prizes!

Thank you for visiting and please feel free to leave me a comment below!

Thank You Shaklee For My All Expenses Paid Trip to Maui

In early May of this year I enjoyed an incredible vacation in Maui, soaking up the spectacular warm weather and stunning beach front views. What made this trip even more special was that It was completely paid for by Shaklee. An all expense paid trip to Maui for simply doing what I love and helping others around me realize their potential towards building their own businesses.

Here’s a great little primer on what we were to look forward to:

I wasn’t the only one; hundreds of other Shaklee business owners including several from my team were also fortunate enough to travel to Maui for an unforgettable week of doing anything, all at Shaklee’s expense. It was surreal to say the least. Normally we would need to count our ‘pennies’ for months and years to afford a trip like this (that’s me in the middle!).

Earning this trip was no fluke however. It took a lot of hard work and education to help my team begin to reach their goal and it was a wonderful thrill to see Yafeng, Noel, Iris and Qiaolan all honoured by the Shaklee group for their own outstanding performance. The beauty of the Island and it’s people touched me with wonder daily. The sunsets were crisp, soothing and bursting with colour. The ocean would morph from intensely turbulent to rolling waves and epic surf, then finally calm and quite at slack tide. These calm moments was a time for reflection and having fun with our teammates sipping mai tai’s and envisioning the future. (Whoops, shopping too, naturally)!

Here’s a wonderful small gallery of photos taken by Richard Marks Photography. (and used with permission)

[srizonfbalbum id=1]

As I reflect on this amazing trip with all of these wonderful people I reflect on how fortunate I am to live a life with splendour based on doing what I love which I believe is the epitome of all that life can offer. This business is awesome!

We are gearing up for fall now.

2014 Shaklee Spring Regional Conference – Meeting My Inspirational Mentors

The Shaklee Regional Conference was so exciting. I was really pumped before going because I worked hard with so many people and had achieved lots of successes. I was particularly looking forward to meeting Dr. Bruce Daggy who is a senior scientist with Shaklee Corp. as he is doing very interesting research.

A Chance to Meet Some of my Inspirational Mentors

Friday night did not let me down; I had a chance to meet with Jennifer Glacken, Master Coordinator from Ohio, and Tasha Starr, in qualification for Master from Manitoba, Canada.

After a short gathering in the beautiful hotel dining area, I got private time speaking with Dr. Daggy. He was so fascinating. He told me about how Shaklee selects the raw materials for their products. There are no “fillers” in these products; rather they are concentrates of whatever the most active and healthy substance is for the product. For example, for the Omega 3’s, many companies put one part that is purely Omega 3 and the rest can be parts of algae, etc. that surround the concentrated omega but do not contain it. For the Shaklee Omega it is so pure and delivers. For the other Shaklee products he told me that even if they are stamped, Organic, by the supplier, Shaklee performs hundreds of tests on them to make sure this is for certain.

He also alluded to the fact that there are several studies underway and I got the sense that the Shaklee Scientists are working hard to reveal some of the key ingredients needed regarding long life and aging over a prolonged period (in other words living longer) and much more comfortably.
This scientific research will be revealed in Long Beach, California between August 8 – 13 this year.

Take a moment to watch this wonderful video of Dr. Daggy discussing the ‘Shaklee Movement’.

Saturday: Filled with Amazing and Motivational Presentations

On Saturday, we heard from Jennifer Glacken and Tasha Starr and I also met with Elena Panos who is from New York City (my home town). Ian and Karen Grant, who are only Canadian new master’s, were also on the panel of speakers. The speakers were highly animated and influenced me in taking the business seriously and in time management and achieving my goals.

The highlight of he afternoon was the luncheon (which I earned entrance to as a high achiever). To lighten the already jovial atmosphere, the organizers delivered a Mexican theme to the luncheon. The private room was so colorful and the food was delicious. There was a Chinese translator present and I got to know several of our Chinese downline business leaders in ways that I was unable to before since I haven’t been able to understand Mandarin. That was such a pleasure; to really hear from them. We have terrific people in our downline.

Full of Pride for our Shaklee Business Team

It’s with quite a bit of pride that I should mention that we also have the only new BC Fast Track Executive Coordinator on our team; Yafeng Liang from Victoria! Yafeng started working her Shaklee business last September, 2013 and became an Executive Coordinator at the end of February of this year! Fantastic! (This usually takes 15 months at the least)! I accepted a copy of her cheque for $25,000 on her behalf at the event and was so proud to do so. Yafeng has a great flair for the business and shows people how to become successful using the Rx for Healthy Living Gold Ambassador Kit (a big savings to new members and distributors).

Marion Ellis, Coordinator, Yafeng’s upline mentor received a cheque for $12,500 for helping Yafeng with her success. Marion provides a steadfast, steady approach and encourages each distributor’s successes and for them to be accepted and cared about exactly as they are.

I am so remarkably proud of these hard working and driven ladies!

As well, Sandi Rainer and Maggie Rayne, advanced rank to Senior Executive Coordinators! (Congrats Sandi & Maggie) and thanks for your continuous support and knowledge.
This business gives me a chance to be so openhearted with others. It feels great and I can’t ask for anything better work-wise in my life.

Were you at the event? I’d love to hear about your experiences and what really stood out for you as the most meaningful moment for you. Please click here to write to me.

When are Supplements Necessary

It’s a tough world out there. Our air and water are often full of toxic chemicals and many of our food choices are less than nutritious. Most of us have highly busy lives and devote too little time to being physically active. Despite the fact that nearly 7 out of 10 Americans are overweight to obese, we are ironically often under-nourished. In fact, up to 90 percent of Americans are lacking key nutrients in our diets. -i

Ensuring we are getting the nourishment needed to support our bodies optimal function can be a challenge, but nutritional supplementation can help fill in those gaps that exist in just about everyone’s diet. Countless research studies and health experts agree that supplementing with key nutrients, including a multivitamin, adequate vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids provide a good nutritional foundation.

To understand the relationship between supplementation and long-term health, a first-of-its-kind Landmark Studyii was conducted in collaboration with researchers from the University Of California, Berkeley, School Of Public Health.

Researchers gathered a group of Shaklee long-term (20+ years) multi-supplement users and compared their health to non-supplement users. Results were adjusted to account for a number of potential confounders, including age, sex, education, income, and body mass index (BMI).

Questionnaires, on-site physical examinations, and blood work were used to compare nutritional status, serum biomarkers of health risk, and self-assessed health status between the three groups.

The dietary supplements consumed on a daily basis by more than 50 percent of the multi-supplement users included a multivitamin/multimineral, B vitamin complex, vitamins C and E, antioxidants, calcium with vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, probiotic, soy protein, glucosamine and an herbal immune supplement.

Researchers discovered that the overall health of long-term multiple supplement users was dramatically different than that of non-supplement users.

The multiple supplement users had improved levels of important heart-healthy biomarkers including 33 percent lower triglycerides, 36 percent lower homocysteine, 59 percent lower C-reactive protein levels, along with 11 percent lower cholesterol to HDL ratio when compared to the non-supplement users. As expected, the multiple supplement users also had higher blood levels of vitamin A, C, E, D, folate, and iron than non-supplement users.

Risk of disease was also much lower in these multiple dietary supplement users than nonusers. As a group, the multiple supplement users had lower risk of high blood pressure (39 percent), lower risk of diabetes (73 percent), and multiple measures of cardiovascular risk were directionally better with supplementation. Multiple supplement users were also four times more likely to describe their health as “very good” or “excellent” compared to non-supplement users.

In most cases, the single supplement users’ health markers fell between these two groups, suggesting that multiple supplementation use was both safe and effective.

Quality supplements can help fill nutritional gaps left by less than optimal food choices, our overworked bodies, and our toxic environment.
